Every morning when I read the paper, there's another murder, another crime. This poem portrays the fear, the heartbreak of the people and how my city dies every night with each murder, that is revealed when the light of day dawns.

Burning City Sunset

White faces in the windows
Streets besieged in ash
Winds mourning in the sunset
Orange fire spreading across the sky
The city will burn
Engulfing victims tormented by pain
Overwhelming thoughts of angst
Prevailing as the city's bane
Shrieks of cries and sorrow
Howls of revenge and madness
The sun continues to die
Bleeding over the city
The orange has fallen to the sidewalks
As darkness creeps cold
The fires swarm the streets
Thundering through the windows
Fuel keeps burning
The smell of flesh and sin
Darkness blankets the horror
Until the morning

I don't know why writers born between 1986-89 are dazzling and powerful. This is mesmerizing and I guess not only in Nigeria that these crimes occur...

Boo-hoo!

Such vivid imagery! A wonderfully written piece about the very sad demise of a city that is home to an extremely talented young man.

This is outstanding. Your ability to bring me to the scene is powerful! I saw it all, playing out in my mind's eye. We have murders here in Louisville, KY everday as well. You have captured the horrors of it all. Excellent piece, Shas! kathy
