August winds

August winds

the winds arrive early this year,
leaning through the last days of winter
with their dry insistence,
moving across the month
huffing and puffing it forward.

august has always carried
this restless breath
—a stirring in the trees,
a shifting of light,
a sense that something near
is preparing to open.

I feel it in the way
the air stirs up the stillness,
each gust seeming to lift
the long weight of the year
toward its next shape.

soon the calendar will turn,
as these winds press forward

our twentieth year coming into view
—not with fanfare,
but with the steady push
clearing a space

where days gather themselves
forming a quiet line
toward whatever comes.

The concept, from my northern hemisphere point of view, of an August wind foretelling the end of winter, is totally disorienting. Once I turned my world upside down everything fell into place, the seasons changing and what that means and what it heralds.

I thoroughly enjoyed this, it's magical, the second stanza is a poem within a poem.

I have forgotten where you are. Here in Sydney it is the end of winter and we already have the feeling you write of. I call it spring hope. You describe it so well.
