between us

between us

missing lines

breathe

between us,

their silence

teaching us

to listen harder,

to believe

that absence

is also presence.

This is delicate and wise in a quiet way. The idea that absence is also presence is a nice turn, and the short lines make the reader slow down and actually feel the missing spaces the poem is about. It is almost too tidy though. The thought resolves a little too easily, and the poem stays at the level of statement rather than letting the silence do the work it describes. A small concrete detail would make the missing lines feel more earned. Still, it has a gentle clarity.

Minimalism is a beautiful way of approaching poetry. Find the essence of what you intent to say, whittle away whatever is extraneous, and create something as fine as "between us".

Mr. Rockda and I were talking about this very thing yesterday.

So true. Sometimes saying nothing brings us closer.
