a hopeful little poem for everyone

unprinted dots

" . . . "

He passes her the pen

he’s been turning

between his fingers,

its barrel warmed

by indecision.

She takes it,

aware she’s touching

the instrument

of whatever thought

he hasn’t voiced.

The atmosphere,

skews enough

to edge along

unprinted dots

. . .

This is a nice, tense little moment. The pen as the instrument of an unvoiced thought is a sharp image, and the intimacy of touching something he has been turning over in his fingers works well. The ending with "unprinted dots" ties back to the title with a soft, open-ended feeling. But the poem is so restrained that it almost keeps the reader outside the room. We sense the tension but never learn what is at stake. A single detail about what he might be avoiding, or what she expects, would deepen the charge. Still, the atmosphere is controlled and quietly electric.

In such a circumstance would something have been finally said between two persons?
