dreams can wait

"dreams can wait"

at my first job’s desk—

shoes tapping cold linoleum,

overhead fluorescence drones—

I was told:

hunker down;

dreams can wait.

years later

the tapping continues

lights now LED

dreams on dimmer switches.

This is tight and quietly bitter. The shift from cold linoleum and fluorescent light to LED and dimmer switches is a smart way to show time passing without actually saying it. The repetition of tapping shoes and waiting dreams gives the poem its whole spine. It ends just as the reader wants a little more, which mostly works, but the dimmer switch image is so good it almost deserves another beat to breathe. Still, it's an efficient little portrait of deferred life.
