Far from the Sea

My love has blown away from me,
Over these islands low and mean
So far beyond this too cold sea,
To realms unguessed, to realms unseen,
Far from this sea.

I miss her touch, her whispering,
The way her scented hair would fold,
Each finger gemmed with one jade ring
Would wind her shining hair of gold,
Such joy would bring.

She'd call me when the wicks burned low,
Under stone arches after dusk,
Most eagerly I then would go
Below the moon's gigantic tusk
Her love to know.

Along the sunken dusty lane,
Orion's star would light our way
Then, hand in hand, in snow or rain,
Walk to the inlet near the bay,
In this domain.

I wept with joy her voice to hear,
She sang of love and pain's surcease,
Her love the perfect balm to fear,
Her kiss was as eternal peace,
In that good year.

The moonlight pale as some bright swan,
Locked in each other's arms, the moon
Would shelter us until the dawn
Erased that starry glad festoon,
Till all were gone.

My love has blown away from me,
Over these islands low and mean
So far beyond this too cold sea,
To realms unguessed, to realms unseen,
Far from this sea.
