Written several years ago for a fellow poet and long-time friend.

To See or Not To See

I see a young boy
eyes closed
fingertips searching
Pretending he knows not what he does.

I see a grown man
hidden by miles
poetry probing
Obscuring meaning with interpretation.

In darkest night, emotions reign
Come morning, reason rules again.

Profound simplicity, nicely structured; I like very much the metrical and rhyming final couplet.

Intriguing . . . not so much in what it says but in what a reader (this one anyway) begins to infer about the poet and your relationship. And there is a relationship between the young boy and the emotions of darkest night; between the grown man and the reason of morning. There is a sense by the end that something was lost, something important.
