I had to move...

I lived in a place where
where ignorance
is served up as inspiration

where a pathological fear
of intellectualism
is a positive trait

where opinions
with no basis in research
are touted as facts

of those that live there
some are assholes
(of them the less said the better)

some are truly more
than just nice people
(I kid you not)

the saddest thing is this
they do not have the tools
to escape

Plato's cave's flickering light
"Tiger, tiger, burning bright."
never plumb the depths
nor climb the heights

imprisoned
in static beliefs

I see that you came to visit Nebraska. You should have stopped by.

Beliefs govern our lives. Without them we would not get up in the morning. It is when people refuse to hear facts disputing them that we get in trouble.

I believe that is the way many places are going lately. Anti-intellectualism. People without education are so much easier to manipulate. I think it's a trend perpetuated by those in control.
Get out of there and hope to find a better place. I like this poem very much because it reflects my thoughts in so many ways.
Well done.

Yes you would certainly have had to move!
I have always been surrounded by people who fear / shun intellect.
Maybe it's too much bother for most but probably as you say they don't have the tools.
This made me think and that is a gift ... You were right to move:)

I've just finished an article about the rise of anti intellectualism. Your struck the chord beautifully.
