A LAD I KNOW
Thea's this lad I got to knowI said lad - a man - not so old
He has a drink problem - he's an
Alcoholic - and he knows he is
Been in and out of prison - years now
He know he'd be in prison - AGAIN
He decided , to give the boozing
I'd see him the street - the other side
I'' call out: '' Hows it going , mate? ''
He proudly call out how many weeks he'd gone with out a drink
Oh how proud he looked , I called out: '' I'm right proud of you , mate ''
Not bothering what others think of us - stuff 'em I say
He grinned back at me - full of pride - liked me saying - I were proud of him
AND - me not bothering about saying that fore all to hear
Some times I saw him with a can - I'd say: '' Whats - that in your hand - mate ''
He'd grin and say holding it fore me to see what he had:
'' It's a coke '' , he proudly told me - I'd respond: '' well dun mate '' , I said , grinning
Back to him
Last week by chance I saw him in town , I saw , the lad standing out side of Argos -
In the High Street
We got to talking
I asked him how he were doing
'' I fell off the wagon - I have ''
He could see I was not happy - in eyes - read the disappoint on my face
'' It was Christmas , that did it ''
I nodded - I understood
'' Well , now you have to start from the beginning - mate - again! ''
'' Yes - next week I will - or week after that! ''
'' NO NOW! '' I said
I asked if he'd taken the 12 steps
'' Yea '' , '' dont like being preached to '' , that I could appreciate
'' Well - mate I DON'T , preach '' , '' I care - I GIVE A FOOK ''
We shook hands in the way is the custom nower days
He smiled - he know I were - genuine - the real - McCoy
I can only hope fore the lad - sadly my hopes are not so high
Nothing I can do - just show I CARE , that I give a fook fore the lad
