Harambe

The child fell from far above.
The ape, Harambe, looked at him,
Unsettled. All the years of being
Trapped inside his prison cell,
Of being bored to worse than
Death as apes of other sorts appeared
Beyond the wall to leer at him.
At night, sometimes, when they
Were gone, he'd stare up at the
Sky and see the stars, and wonder
If there was another ape, a greater
Being, who had lit the sky that
Way, and who, for reasons
Unexplained, had cast an awful
Curse on him, a prisoner, a
Dark-skinned slave. The child
Fell. He reached to grab it,
Save it, so it wouldn't drown.
The apes above began to chatter.
Fools, he thought, they let him
Fall. They don't deserve to have
Him back. He held the child.
He would save him. Then, he
Heard the shot.
