Recidivism

Dunce

There are reasons for thinking I'll always
Be stupid. I'm still smoking cigarettes,
Don't want to quit. I drink until I'm very
Drunk every night. I pick fights with
Rednecks, and go out on nice afternoons
In a T-shirt, some shorts and my helmet
To ride my Suzuki at twice-legal speed.
I don't eat enough vegetables, don't wash
My hands very often. These things seem
Stupid to me, and I'm aching again
To go back to see Ariel. How stupid
Can one man be?

Of Two Minds

That part of mind which is the guy
In school who fathomed everything
Informs the part that is the heart
That it will be destroyed again.
'She doesn't love you. You're
Fool. You'll go to her and learn,
By means of words, or maybe lack
Of words, that she'd hoped you
Would stay away.' The heart,
The stronger part of mind, looks
Up, displaying rage and pain.
'You're not so smart. She's never
Really said she wanted me to leave.
There is a chance she misses me,
And no doubt that I need to see her.'
School-guy mind says nothing more.
He's helpless as the heart begins to
Drag him toward the blunder that
It led him to before.
