Two Views of a Departure
I am thinking of leaving, Ariel, planning to leaveBecause you're so cold. I have lost my desire
To show you my love, to try to account for
The way that you struggle to strangle your
Own. Turn away once more. Your time's
Growing short. I'll be off. You won't see me,
And I will forget you, quickly, I'm guessing,
As you have done nothing for me for months,
But leave me unhappy and cold.
I am Ulysses, you could say,
And I am on my little ship
Upon a reef, beyond your
Reach, and you and your mom
Are the sirens, keening. I should
Plug my ears. I'll find a way,
The tide will rise, to turn and
Sail toward a place beyond
The sound of your complaints.
I'll let you shrivel next to her.
You never learned to get away.
I couldn't coax you from your
Place beside her, so I'm setting
Off, and you can keen with her
Forever, lost and full of misery.
The ship that sails, my trireme,
Is shrinking, just a dot to you,
On the horizon to the north.
You could have come. I said
You could. You didn't. Now,
I'm far away, and you are on
A rock, forever stranded
With your mom.
