Standing Outside of Thebes
There she is, lovely, not speaking,My personal sphinx; her silence
Her riddle, its answer unknown.
Is she angry with me? There's
No sign that she is, and I know
Of no reason why she should be.
I have loved her for years,
And I think I've been kind.
Is she fearful of being seen
Speaking to me? Possibly so.
Her mother demanded I not
Love her daughter. Maybe
She's been told to steer clear
Of me. Is she guilty, still
Loving me, thinking she
Shouldn't? Is that why she
Left? Is it why she is back,
But now utterly silent, at once,
Both my love and my sphinx?
