Salvage Operation
You know this is the only way I haveTo say hello to you. Hello. I hope
You're doing well. You've read that
I am giving up. I won't come near
You anymore, won't look at you
Or greet you or devote a lot of thought
To you. You want me gone. That's
What I'll be, but I've begun to try
To separate the good and bad of us.
The good, a year of eager meetings,
Smiles, pleasant conversations,
I will set apart and save as very
Special memories. The bad,
The year of awkward silence,
Disappearance and betrayal,
I intend to throw away, and,
With what's happened sorted so,
I'll cherish how you were when
You were sweet, and disregard
What's happened since,
And do my best to tell myself
That, though an image still
Exists, the substance of the
Woman I once loved
Has ceased to be.
