Ariel In Amber

I saw you stare at me on Friday morning,
Saw you smile at me when you were sure
No one would see. I felt my heart fill up
With you, though I know you will snub
Me when there's anybody else around,
And I know that the days when you
Would chatter to me eagerly, and you
Would not suppress the pleasure that you
Felt when I came calling are no longer.
They have passed, and I am doomed
To love someone who, frozen like a bug
In amber, loves me back, but dares not
Speak, and stares, as if from on the other
Side of some unyielding substance.
Nothing's changed. I'm entertaining hopes
Again for what can't be. I mouth the words,
“I miss you” into stone, but you do not
Respond. I reach for you. I stub my fingers
As you turn away.
