For Albert
When facing infinity. They simply refuse
To believe it exists. “God made the universe.”
“No, it began with a bang.” In either case,
What came before? Where did God come
From? What was here before the bang,
For whatever reason, occurred? Nobody
Seems to know, or care, because everything
Has a beginning. Everything, surely has to
End, but, in fact, it's absurd to envision
A time before time, a time that is after time,
We see once more that what we believe
Is less about the material world than it is
About the limitations of our little simian minds.
There cannot be an end to space. There
Cannot be an end to time, but there can be
An end to us, and that is what determines
What we know.

Such a Stupid Species
Humans, with their finite lives, are lostWhen facing infinity. They simply refuse
To believe it exists. “God made the universe.”
“No, it began with a bang.” In either case,
What came before? Where did God come
From? What was here before the bang,
For whatever reason, occurred? Nobody
Seems to know, or care, because everything
Has a beginning. Everything, surely has to
End, but, in fact, it's absurd to envision
A time before time, a time that is after time,
We see once more that what we believe
Is less about the material world than it is
About the limitations of our little simian minds.
There cannot be an end to space. There
Cannot be an end to time, but there can be
An end to us, and that is what determines
What we know.
