If Only America Were America

Let America be America for once
Let it be the country it started out to be.
Let it be the pioneer on the plain
Let it be the home the immigrants seek
Let it be the land of opportunity
Where factory jobs are starting places
Where a College Degree is respected

Let it be the place where a middle class thrives
Where public schools are available for all
Where academics and not fairy tales are taught
Where public land is for all to enjoy its beauty
And it's not for sale to the highest bid
Let it be a home where everyone is free.

Let America be the dream the dreamers dreamed—
Let it be the land where never kings connive nor tyrants scheme
Where a man is never crushed by one above.
Let it be a land where women are respected
And are not treated like inferior, stupid beings.

O, let my land be a land where Liberty
Is crowned with no false patriotic wreath,
Let there be quality in the air we breathe
And have clean water for all to drink.

Say, who are you that mumbles in the dark?
And who are you that draws your veil across the stars?

I am the poor white, fooled and pushed apart,
I am the African American bearing slavery’s scars.
I am the red man driven from the land,
I am the immigrant clutching the hope I seek—
I am the woman struggling to raise children
On a salary still inferior to a man's

Finding only the same old stupid plan
Of dog eat dog, where mighty crush the weak.

This is a powerful manifesto that we all need to read. I think this must speak to many in the US now who feel that they have been let down. Extremely well done.

Amen. Good poem, Ashe. Ya, it's a dog
eat dog world anymore. Damn discouraging.

I agree, England, later, Britain. Has a LONG LONG history of Empier building. Bilt, the BIGST empeier in history. It's record, as blake as posable, the British empier, could of talt the romans a few things! when I were at school, I rember a map of the world, pink indecating, bostin of the shear size, of The British empier, up to two thers controld by the British crown-guvernmant. Though the empier brok in to indervigal alegerly free from Britain. It simply changed it's tital, from Empier, to The comonwelth of Natans. With The British queen/king the head of it! And britih guvenmants, still pull the strings behind the seeans! decaides ago, britain, removde the Pime minster, who had been elected. the prom minster of Ausstlera! Britan, still punches well above it's waite and size! I am NOT AT ALL proud of Brtish history! far from it.

I agree with all you are saying, and much more, Ken. However, there was a time when America, in spite of all its sins, it was a place where opportunities were possible and many immigrants flowed to it. There is really no country without sins. England was the first colonizer and oppressor of people when it had an empire. I think America had possibilities at one time, and there are worse countries, but as a super power right now it is going to cost us the end of our planet as we know it. A Country with a leader and a constituency who refuse to believe in Science is no longer a civilized country.
