A love story?? :)

I have a lovely Indian doctor—is there any other kind?

Hmmm … or perhaps a handsome Pakistani?+

Who enters my chamber of sterile isolation on a daily basis

To converse and discuss possibilities

While he checks vital signs and writes things down

I believe he prefers the conversation
Silly, as I can be, I always enjoy the company

of a true romantic, such as he.

Today we discussed the fine points of reincarnation.

I asked him, who would believe in reincarnation

If she thought she would return as an oyster?

To cheer me up he indulged me and said that

Perhaps we could do worse:

As humbly the oyster persists in filtering seawater

And fashioning the daily irritations into luster

(I wondered at this point if he considered me a daily irritation?)

Then, with a mischivious smile, he said,

Dashed with a dot of Tabasco, paired with a dry Martini

Not only will this tender button inspire an erotic fire

In tuxedoed men and women whose shoulders gleam in candlelight

This humble hermit, praying in its rocky cave

This anchorite of iron, calcium, and protein,

Is practically a molluskan saint!

Reserved and sacrificed,

This body and salty liquor of the soul

This oyster is devoured, surrendering it all

—again and again—

For love. *

He then leaves me with a kiss on my forehead, to return tomorrow with more stimulating conversation.

Dear Ashe,

What a gorgeous vision to behold: you lying on an oyster bed as an iridescent pearl, waiting for a handsome diver to reveal your ancient beauty to a world in dire need of wonderment.

Ah well, back to the washing up and the iridescent soap bubbles... ... ...
