Valentine
If you love me now (how could you not; I broughtThis card for you?), I doubt that you will for too long.
I'm not a warm and cuddly guy. I brood. I ache.
I'd rather not endure the pain of walks with you,
And I don't even watch TV. I hate to shop. I hate
The flag, the symbol of this toxic land of violence
And punishment. If someone let me have some
Rockets, I'd lay waste to Washington, and come
To stand outside the ruins with a rifle, which I'd
Use to drop those who were still alive, and then
I'd hit the corporate boardrooms. Then I'd hit
The NRA, and, finally, each Baptist church,
Each Catholic church. I don't like gods. My
Cosmos has no room for them. In fact, it has
No room for life. You are, though very dear to me,
A process, not a living thing. You're of the earth,
And so am I. Our paths have crossed, and I will
Hold you. I would do most anything to make sure
You're not suffering, but both of us will die in time.
Our processes will cease, and what we're made of
Will find other uses. Earth will go on. We'll be
With it, mindless, loveless, as I'm sure you'll be
Before too long.
