The Neighbors
Things went bad rather quickly, and, afterward,Silence seemed better than conversation.
Darkness was preferable to light. He found
An apartment not far from her and their children,
And dated an overweight seamstress, who he
Thought was fine, but the kids didn't like.
She fell for a man who had problems
With heroin. Nothing got easier. Nobody
Smiled on holidays when they would be in
One room. The children weren't sorry when
He just gave up, and moved out to the coast
With his new seamstress wife. The boyfriend
Was found on the floor in their bathroom,
Needle in arm, with no signs of life. The kids,
Understandably, never seemed happy, but one
Of the girls was sent off to college, where
She met a boy, who was thoughtful
And sweet, and her life rather quickly
Went right.
