for me as a diver, the sight of 400 whales at the bottom of the sea is the most spiritual moment I have experienced.

The Whales Arrive at Montijo Bay

Traveling through the cold sea,
Four hundred whales have arrived seeking warmth at Montijo Bay
in Panama, in the bay where I swim in front of my house.

In the wider deeps, they dived beneath the icebergs
The humpback whales, the sperm-whales, the hammer-heads, the killers
there they blew hot white breath out of the sea.

There they rocked, and rocked,
through the sensual ageless rituals
in the depths of the seven seas

Through the salt, they reeled with drunk delight
and reached the tropics trembling with love
Rolling and massive, with the strong desires

The great bulls lie up against their brides
in the blue deep bed of the ocean,
a mountain pressing on a mountain

Seeking the zest of life.
The bulls let out an inward roaring, strong, and intense,
as they rest in the soft, wild clutch of a she-whale’s body

Deep under the water, the whales keep moving filled with bliss
moving in the sea to bear their young in the tropical warmth
hundreds of whales moving in mid-ocean, suspended in its waves

Enormous mother whales now lie dreaming with strange whale eyes wide open, suckling their young
in the waters warmed by our tropical sun.

The bull-whales gather their female and whale-calves in a ring
when danger threatens, on the surface of the sea
they arrange themselves facing the threat, encircling, huddled monsters of love.

And all this is happening under the surface, in the salt,
where the whales, invited by Neptune, god of the sea,
watches as his guests arrive without words, to feel the warmth

Dense and happy, they bliss in our very own Montijo Bay.

You have described the sight beautifully. It's so lively feels that I am there right now. Lovely

All at Coo & Co enjoyed the trip we went on with this poem (-:>)

The description is vivid, pulling us into the water. It's very sensuous too. In fact, it's so powerful and written with so much enthusiasm, we don't think you need Neptune towards the end. We're fascinated by Panama, and whales rule the sea! We hope you'll write more about your experiences, Ashe.

one trick pony The PoetBay support member heart!
as i read this i thought of the moon, for it and the sea, under the sea, are equally distant and exotic to me.

this is a beautiful, serene, passionate poem, thank you for sharing. your awe and appreciate and sense of wonder and delight come through *
