Pimbahal Pukhu, built in 14th century, is one of the historical ponds of Kathmandu.

Drowning

Pimbahal Pukhu. Holding hands, we sit

By the temple and look into the future.

A little goldfish quivers on the waters,

A small blue swallow thrums inside our hearts.

You hum an old tune, look into my eyes,

And say, "Is life always so beautiful?"

I think about helpless days of childhood,

A family of four drowning in needs,

The whole drama on display like a sketch

In a museum. "I don't know," I say.

You nod, one of those toys, head on a spring.

"It's too beautiful, this place, this time," you say.

My past comes boomeranging back to me,

And hits me hard. I'm drowning in the pond.
