Ophelia's Eyes
Twice a week, I get to see the worldThrough Ophelia's eyes, and what
A wondrous place it is. It's huge,
And doesn't make much sense. I have
To do things fifteen times to see if
I can count on how they'll end,
And anything I come across turns out
To be a toy: a bottle taken from the trash,
A pair of tongs, a physics book, an uncle,
Or a stack of coins. I dance and sing
Because I'm so excited to encounter them,
Even if I've played with them the afternoon
Before. I'm learning words and silly phrases,
“Tally ho!” and “Wait a minute!”
Everyone is sweet to me. They hover
Nearby constantly. They still do when
They're told to go. This is how I see
The world when Ophelia's here with me.
When she is gone, it shrinks back down
Into a set of tools.
