Always You

It was always you,
always and ever,
in the creak of the stair
and that scent in the air
the smile on a cloud
as it floated on by
and I sighed
when you passed
and cried in the dusk
when the sun finally set
in the glint of your smile.

It was always you
even when it wasn't
when the wrong lips kissed
and the wrong hips
swayed to a dance
out of tune.
It was just you
in the lines on your palm
that fitted to mine
hands swinging
hearts singing
it was only you.

It was always you
always and forever
in the shaky line
on a distant horizon.
Only and ever
as never before,
the blue of an eye
and the curve of a sigh.
In the morning and night
at dusk and at light
It was always you
in the lie of a smile
and the truth in an eye,
the hand on arm
and the breath in of a kiss
that miss of a lifeline
that slipped
and kept me safe.

It was only
and ever
forever and more
that us of us
and the
dance of two souls,
the missed opportunity
and the lost and found
of a heart shaped song,
it was only you
only and ever.

This is very nice, Elle, the love that couldn't be, but wouldn't end.

The fluency and ease is that of a hard-fought aesthetic proficiency. This is a poem to read and to re-read.

After reading this I sighed, looked into the middle distance and felt loss, not tragic loss but familiar soul stirring loss. You have written a universal declaration of pining, stoic missing.

It's so good to read you here again Elle.
