How Life Should be Lived

I'm dining with the oligarchs tonight.
The food is good. It's fun to watch
The politicians pump our hands, and
Bow and scrape. The speaker, with
A wagging finger, warns us of the dangers
That we face, the desiccated left. A few
Seem truly frightened, while the others
Suck cigars and laugh. They've heard
This tocsin sound before, and know
That bribes, applied discreetly,
Dissipate all opposition. Life is good.
Dessert is served, and I, a guest, not one
Of them, depart. I haven't paid a thing.
The oligarchs explain to me that this
Is how life should be lived: a banquet
For the privileged, a bill for all the rest.
