Munden, December 1962.

A walk in the snow

We woke up, surprised, that day, to see
Fresh fallen snow, crisp, smooth and deep,
And the chilled earth, silent, still and calm,
And nature beneath its blanket, asleep.

A sharp hoar-frost was covering all,
Like a stardust veil laid over the snow,
Sprinkling it lightly with fine sugar-crystals,
Sparkling bright in the wintry sun-glow.

We walked in wonder by tall, dry sticks
Of the summer flowers' mortal remains,
Stark reminders of warm sunny days
And the life-giving, gentle Springtime rains.

As we walked, we felt the featherlike touch
Of the sun as it climbed up ever higher,
Lighting the branches of trees all adorned
With crystalline jewels like diamond fire.

In the winter's cold I felt our love grow,
But as winter passed, how could I know
Love would grow cold in the warm spring glow,
And this was our last walk in the snow.

Autumn and winter give us the most beautiful and poignant poems. This poem is of their venerable and noble company. Thank you so much for posting it.

Ah, sweet sorrow! This is lovely, sparkly, romantic, and ends with a soft sigh of loss, and what might have been.
