The Prince of Darkness Turns Away
I know how I am, my love, and I know,Also, how you are, and that I can't stay
At your side, lest darkness radiate from
Me, and what I cherish most in you,
The brightness in your eyes and face,
The birdlike trill within your voice,
Would be eroded over time until
You've turned so black as I. I cannot
Face the thought of that, so I will go.
You must go on, and bathe the world
In your brilliance. I will slither back
Into a crevice or a cave somewhere
To put my oozing gloom to use,
And mourn how I have turned from
You, who might have brought some
Light to me, aware that darkness,
Unrestrained, always will conquer
Light.
