Trainee

The little girl sometimes likes to lie to me.
It's all in fun. She says that I'm a kangaroo,
And we both laugh, but then I wonder, is she
Learning how to be more like the grown-ups
Who she sees, the salesman at the auto store,
The guy who's working on the basement,
Women selling magazines and beauty
Treatments, help desk clerks, and every
Politician, every CEO, the whole damned
World? I wonder as a woman on the telephone
Attempts to tell me that I've lost my Internet
Because of something that I've done.
I know that's what she's trained to do,
And I'm annoyed because I cannot read
The news to learn if his unending lies
At last have brought the downfall
Of our president. The little girl's in her
Car seat, just about to go back home.
I look at her. She giggles and says
I'm a kangaroo.
