For J

Please Come

I want you close to me. I want
The darkness, real and metaphorical,
To stay at bay, held off by your
Your strong arms and admonitions.
I want peace of mind, and, after
All these wretched decades, I know
Only you have got the strength
And will to save me from what
Coalesces in the square:
The fascists and their well-heeled
Sponsors, leering faces, foaming
Mouths. The sun sets on civility.
Come now, tonight, and help me
Slither off. I'm not sure where to go.
Is there somewhere in Africa,
In Asia, where a man who asks
For nothing more than decency
Can live in peace and water his
Petunias? Oh, I need you near.
I'm almost wholly wrapped in
Darkness. Come and rescue me.
