Just ask those in Hong Kong, Iran, Iraq, Palestine, Venezuela, Chile and India.
Right; we're cruel,” and slink away. They
Are not swayed by votes or throngs
Protesting in the streets. They'll let elections
Take their courses when there isn't hope
Of change, and let the crowds wave signs
And sing, but, should they sense that they
Are challenged, if the wrong folks start
To gain through actions or the ballot box,
The goons will come to swing their clubs.
The soldiers' rifles will be aimed, and naive
Marchers will be broken, murdered,
Gathered up and jailed. The powers
That be don't want to leave, and won't
Unless the force they use to stay in place
Is overcome by even greater force.

Placards and Ballots Never Liberated Anyone
The powers that be don't ever say, “You'reRight; we're cruel,” and slink away. They
Are not swayed by votes or throngs
Protesting in the streets. They'll let elections
Take their courses when there isn't hope
Of change, and let the crowds wave signs
And sing, but, should they sense that they
Are challenged, if the wrong folks start
To gain through actions or the ballot box,
The goons will come to swing their clubs.
The soldiers' rifles will be aimed, and naive
Marchers will be broken, murdered,
Gathered up and jailed. The powers
That be don't want to leave, and won't
Unless the force they use to stay in place
Is overcome by even greater force.
