Such a High Calling
“Do you think I should stop writing poetry?,”I asked. “What?,” she replied, looking slightly
Annoyed. She'd been dozing. “I wonder
If I'm wasting time. No one reads what I write,
And I can't say I blame them. Poetry's gotten
To have a bad smell. Almost all of it's putrid,
Precious or pointless, or clumsily-rhymed.
Say you've written a poem, and you'll clear
The room, so why should I write them?”
She reclosed her eyes. “Is there anything
Else you can do?”
