I Went Outside

They're counterpoints, these unremembered
Elements of life beyond the walls: the smells
Within the air, picked up from dirt and plants,
And stockyards, even passing diesel trucks,
The breeze, its feel, the sound it makes as it
Threads through the leafless trees, the river's
Almost silent rushing, raptors gliding overhead,
And shouting geese in great formations, flying
Toward the north again, while deer slip from
The trees and brush below to forage on our
Garden. Here is life with humans, if not
Absent, taking lesser roles. The distant
Wars, the vile leaders, soul-destroying
Plutocrats and flunkies, looming large inside,
Diminish, and my spirits rise, as I acquaint
Myself with all of these forgotten things.
