Nobody Whines Like an American
Will hardship breed humility? Most likely not,But one can hope, especially if one is among
Those the newly pained have persecuted so
Off-handedly. Poor souls, they've panicked.
Now they quiver days on end inside their homes.
They dash to stores where they find empty
Shelves, so like their victims do, the North
Koreans, Venezuelans, Cubans and Iranians,
All strangled by the sanctions put up thoughtlessly
In better times. Will our new martyrs realize
That it's no fun to be afraid, to do without,
Or will they (as they've done before) convince
Themselves that their misfortune, worse,
By far, than others anywhere have known,
Has come from a malicious god, and they
Need not feel sympathy toward those they
May have harmed?
