Let's Leave Well Enough Alone
I'm not going to ask you to marry me. I thinkBoth of us realize that what we are to each other
Is apt to prove fragile and brief. It is, however,
A thing of some value. I love to see you next
To me, wearing a slinky dress and spike-heeled
Shoes. I loved being under the water in Fiji,
Looking at coral, watching you laugh,
Causing bubbles to issue out of your mask.
I cherish each night when we're naked
In bed, but I've learned from experience
That such enchantments grow pale.
They get taken for granted and lose their
Charm when vows are exchanged. I can't
Envision a pot roast dinner, a basket of laundry,
A night of TV, with someone who so stirs me,
Thus, though I am thrilled to be with you
Each day, I won't ask you to marry me.
