Wad it Up and Put it in the Bin

Let us be done with democracy. Nothing good
Ever came out of it: shitty schools and ugly
Buildings, wretched art and ruling classes
Made up, not of clergymen or nobles, people
With some taste, but money-grubbing
Parvenus. Nobody builds cathedrals now.
Nobody pays for paintings or for sculptures,
Operas, symphonies, except for those
Which, prove, at auction, that they're
Good investments, guaranteed to bring
Some profits to said sticky-fingered parvenus.
The rich grow richer. Gates go up.
The poor are called inferior. The polls
Are rigged, as are the courts, as are
The legislatures, and the jails are filled
With former serfs and slaves, and the benighted
Land, not kingdom or theocracy, drifts
Dully toward dissolution, ruined, stupid,
Ugly, broken. Pavlov's humans kill
Themselves while salivating to a dream:
The Founders' poorly thought-out fantasy:
Democracy.
