Gin and Tonic

Any liquor drink is good on torrid August
Evenings, but all don't satisfy the same.
A Scotch brings warmth. It's winter's
Pleasure. Daiquiris, so thick and sweet,
Aren't too refreshing in the heat. My
Standard is a Cuba libre, barely more
Than rum and Coke, an uninspired
Workman's drink, but one which slakes
The thirsts of mambo dancers, stevedores
And prisoners of cubicles alike. Far
Better is the gin and tonic, stiff and tart,
Quite clearly British, seemingly (though
Really not) the secret pleasure of pith
Helmeted old racists, country clubbers,
Denizens of corporate boards. I'm
Drinking one as I am writing. Summer's
Lash no longer stings, and I, more
Stevedore than racist, claim the drink
For all mankind. Thank me when
You've time.
