When the Humans Withdrew
For a few weeks, the toxic crust of human existenceThinned, and animals wandered the empty roads.
Birds could be heard, and the unending fires
Diminished. The sky became brilliantly blue.
Nature, done up as Death with his scythe,
Made her way through the cities, cutting down
Millions, billions retreated to their homes
To hide...and the rest of the planet and Nature
Rejoiced. But the overseers of all of these
Billions demanded they come out to generate
Money, so, soon enough, though Nature kept
Slaying, the toxic crust thickened again.
