Injury's Utility
A sharp pain has utility to one who suffersToo much comfort. Suddenly, there is
A reason to cry out, to tell the truth:
Having all that one could want may
Fail to foster satisfaction doubly, as
One's misery seems shameful, not to be
Proclaimed. The sharp pain brings one
Absolution. Now, one can say, “Look,
I suffer. Here is what is hurting me,”
And, even if nobody cares, the new
Discomfort brings distraction from
That other never-ending, hard to pinpoint
Pain.
