Breugal's "Landscape with the Fall of Icarus"

The painting shows us a farmer plowing his
Field, a shepherd tending his sheep, a man who
Is fishing beside the shore, and some boats
At anchor. No one has noticed the boy, whose
Wings of wax had raised him too close to
The sun, plunging to die in the water nearby.
“That's how it goes,” they all would have said,
If someone had shouted, “Oh, look at that boy!”
“Why would anyone think they could fly?
Why would they do what nobody has done?,”
They'd have asked as they turned back to
Chores they've performed every day of their
Utterly beastly lives. Why, indeed, you pitiful
Creatures. We should have kept living in caves.
