Friend Once, Acquaintance Now
He bored me all weekend with blather,This person who came to visit, who had
Been a friend. Fascinated by kinship,
Celebrity, gossip regarding his relatives
And his hometown, and, of course,
Anybody who's been on TV, he neither
Stopped talking nor bothered to listen.
I thanked him for coming, thanked
Heaven he'd left. In the quiet this morning,
I wondered what I ought to tell him
To show how much I'd valued him
And his nonsense. By lunchtime,
I'd hit upon this: I wrote that I'd just
Trimmed my nails.
