Brace yourselves. The writers are coming.

Battle Hymn of the Creative Writing Major

Let us these final fateful days record.
Come, English grad! This exhortation heed:
Take up thy pen to ply against the sword!

At last those years of workshops bear reward.
O BFA, imbue our wrists with speed!
Let us these final fateful days record.

In truth of writers’ might we find accord:
“Murdered by words,” the vapid headlines read.
Take up thy pen to ply against the sword!

Mistakes we cannot sanction nor afford,
So keep thy style guide close in case of need.
Let us these final fateful days record.

If physical exertion be abhorred,
Then stand with us; let banter be thy steed!
Take up thy pen to ply against the sword!

Too long has our potential been ignored
So rally as the shreds of hope recede:
Let us these final fateful days record.
Take up thy pen to ply against the sword!

Ducks
Ah the happy return of the Villanelle
I love the form and I love that you've designated it a Battle Hymn. I'd gladly take up my pen and run into battle alongside thee.

It's unusual to see formal forms online these days. I'm the type who's happy to read both met and non-met poetry. Congrats on this villanelle, Lady Courtaire. I like the steadfast IP and, particularly, 'let banter be thy steed!' Clip-clop, clip-clop :o)

I have an especial fondness for villanelles, and have written 25-line versions of the form myself! I cherish the barbed humour, the agile dexterity, oh, many things here!
