Swing Voters
They're not the sort of people you wouldWant in charge of history, yet here they are,
An actuary and a training manager. They
Have a house. It's nice. They have two kids
(And both will be successful). All the public
Schools nearby are amply funded. All the studies
Say that they're among the best. They think
They pay too much in taxes, worry that
The so-far unseen hordes of inner city Blacks
And anarchists may show up soon. It would
Be best if everything they know could stay
The way it is, but history tugs at their hems.
The nation's rent, and, on one side, are those
Who argue that it's time to move ahead, to do
So bravely, curbing thuggish cops and plutocrats,
And all those dreadful toothless morons
Who still favor segregation, and who want
God back in schools, and yet...those inner
City hordes remain a threat. Those thuggish
Cops may be the ones who maintain safety
In their pleasant neighborhoods, and plutocrats,
Well, they're employers. Let them be. Another
Round of voting looms. Will these two
Supernumeraries choose to move their nation
Forward, or will they support the forces
Pledged to hold it back?
