They Did What? Really? Why Should I Care?

I'll take the work and its maker's name.
You can learn who that person was.
The sordid details of his or her life
Would be noises to me. They might
Color the work, and that would be
Wrong. Any creation should stand
On its own to please or annoy me,
Its maker, if warranted, being examined
Entirely separately. Monster or saint,
Pervert or paragon, artists, like most
Of us, often are dull. Go read the gossip,
If that's what appeals to you. I'll focus
On what was made.
