HOW I GOT MY NEPHEWS INTO READING

I read the auto biographies of Spike Milliagan I laughed out loud
The oldest wonted need to find why - that he did - read other books
Now he reads orders books eager now to read more books
The youngest had dyslexic problems - it's geugenic - his mother has it
Schools were not committed to teach & help him

So it were down to me - the half blind leading the temperately blinded
I chose Jack London books - to be our aid - London not the easiest writer to read
In this way the lad could see I had problems with not a few words used by London
I'd read the left side pages - the lad the right side page
And being London - words used I'd in the parsed had said such words were WRONG to use in daly conversation - I expllaind that when reading those words had to be Read- knowing such words were WRONG - the reader KNOWS they were - WRONG
The reader knowing why they were - SO SO WRONG!
Some words were diffacalt fore me to read ! - 'cos the words in common use!
So we had piles of dictionary's & thesaurus's - as & when one had the word/s in them

I'd make a note of the word/s and look 'em up in the library it had THE COMPLETE
Oxford twenty six volumes printed in the 1930's - to find the word/s & an explanation
Of the word/s

Sadly the library burnt down since the complete oxford died in the flames!
The lad overcame his reading problems - has a tends to prioritize getting books
Over anything else!
Both now in there 40's - and reading books as often as they can!

I always find this story heartwarming, Ken :) You did well by your nephews to help them understand that reading is very important for knowledge and understanding of the world, but also it's always a beautiful refuge as well. Your nephew who suffers dyslexia was probably a bit better protected from suffering the self-confidence and self-worth desintegration such a disorder creates. By your example, your support and your love, I'm sure you've saved him a lot of that devastatingly destructive grief. Beautiful words by a beautiful heart, thanks.
