Anyway, I Won't be Missed

It's just coincidence that I am here as my
Old high-school classmates meet to celebrate
Their having graduated fully fifty years ago.
I told them I would not attend, as I was fond
Of few of them, and haven't given any thought
To them, or to our school, over the decades
Which have passed, and, also, I am unaccomplished.
I'm not famous. I'm not rich. There's nothing
I have done which could force them to be impressed
With me, so why would I subject myself to
Painful efforts to converse with people who
Have chosen to keep living in the suburbs,
And have lost their teeth, their hair, their
hips, and gaze at me through chicken skin?
I'm here, instead, to see the ocean and the mountains,
And reflect on things I did and places where
I went (in truth, including high school), it seems
Strange to even say it, fifty years ago.
