A Sea Shanty

An interregnum; she's still back in Renton. I have
Driven west. She works from home. I dully plod
The main street of a harbor town, one side a line
Of fish-and-chips joints, gift shops, charter tour
Places, one unending slips of boats, some crabbers,
Others gill-net fishers. Yesterday, she reeled me
In with little effort. Two years on my own left
Me a desperate creature, eager for her angled bait:
A baseball game, a bag of peanuts, beer, accompanied
By batting lashes, laughter. Brought ashore, expertly
Gutted once again, I wait. Tomorrow, she'll consume
Me. Then, she'll go, and I'll retreat into the depths.
I'll heal, by now, I'm one big scar, and get along
Okay until I come too close, and she decides
To cast her line.
