Gods Don't Stay Forever
You knew that, sooner or later, they'd leave. They said that they wouldn't. When they
First arrived, they were gods, so superior,
Brandishing fearsome technology, showing
The savages how to lead civilized lives.
Bombs fell, and veils did. Girls went
To school, and elections were held.
The country (some cities, some neighborhoods)
Started to seem as if they'd become little
Ohios, but, out of their sight, nothing
Actually changed. The bombs blew up
Markets and weddings and schools, but
The old rulers couldn't be killed or defeated.
They waited. They picked off the gods,
One by one, and those beings grew weary
And ever less civilized. At last, they
Abandoned you, and their Ohios were
Brought back to how they had been.
The veils have returned, the girls sent
Home. You knew, sooner or later,
They'd be.
