A Week on Hood Canal

Given my druthers, I'd probably reserve a cottage
Along the Hood Canal. I'd wish you would visit.
I know that you wouldn't, but, even as I grieved,
I'd wander the beach, watching out for the ospreys
And orcas, and looking for oysters to eat, though
I'd rather have clams. You would work from your
Home, some way off, near Seattle. You, being so
Busy, would not think of me, and, as my week
Expired, and I repacked my bags for the flight
Back to Omaha, I might reflect on the soothing
Surroundings I'd known for that time, and the void
That your absence had conjured. I have to admit
That I've gotten accustomed to that. I will leave,
And remember those lovely surroundings, and, also,
That you were not there.
