and everybody else with good intentions

For the Progressive Members of Congress

I do somewhat admire you for your zeal
To make better this broken world, and I'm
Keen to see who you'll try saving today.
The hungry? The hated? The victims
Of wars? Wildlife? Maybe the planet
Entirely. I wish you well. I honestly do,
But I doubt that your efforts will bring you
Success. For each one of your sort who
Intends to improve things, one thousand
Stand, scowling, determined to maintain
The evils you battle. If you win, they lose,
And they don't, you'll discover. Almost on
Their side are the billions of others who,
Should they stop milling like cattle, stop
Fearing what could be, but isn't, would
Join your crusades. You've learned by now
That they won't. They stay frozen,
Stupidly barring the way.
