Unexpectedly
We were young in those days, eagerTo demonstrate that what we were
Wasn't what we must be. Take a job.
Take the money. Quit. Leave for
The coast. All the calcification
Which comes with adulthood
Would not hobble us. We were
Destined to wander, but I'm damned
If we weren't quite quickly immobilized:
First, there were children, afterwards,
Mortgages, car loans and co-pays.
One morning, we woke and we were
Our parents: rooted and no longer
Young.
